The Steampipe update wiped out my custom crosshairs Now back to the crappy default "5 dot" crosshairs. I've tried to rerun the Misheps Basement program, but it does not seem to work with the Steampipe update. Tried to manually load the custom files from the Bullseye Crosshairs website (and then write protect them), putting them in the new file locations that Steampipe now uses for crosshairs. But this didn't work either. So I'm wondering if anybody else has experienced the same problem, and also if anyone has found a way to restore their custom crosshairs (and colors). Popeye

What I had to do was follow the instructions in the "custom" folder for the game (ah man, follow the instructions!). This is found under "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp".
What worked for me was to set up the "my_custom_stuff\resource" folder under the "custom" folder, and add the custom crosshair files "halflife2.tff" and "hl2crosshairs.tff" (such as can be found at BullsEye Crosshairs), making sure to Install these fonts after adding them. To change the color, first copy the default "ClientScheme.res" file (found in "C:\Program Files(x86\Steam\SteamApps\common\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2\resource") into the custom "resource" folder, and then change the HUD color in the usual fashion (change the "Normal" color under "// HL1-style HUD colors"). Though the game is not supposed to modify custom files, it might be a good idea to set all the custom files as Read Only.
Note that using the previous technique of simply replacing the above files in their default locations by custom versions, does not work. The game rejects them and goes back to their defaults (except for the hl2crosshairs.tff file for some reason, but it may be a good idea to set up the custom version in the "custom" folder as per instructions).
Setting up the custom "autoexec.cfg" file under "C:\Progam Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\cfg" seems to work fine, and in fact the Steampipe update moved this file from its old location (under your "account name" folder) to the new one under "common". It was still set as Read Only.
Hope this works for everyone else. Interested in any feedback on this, such as other/better methods, etc..

This folder is automatically scanned when the game boots for VPK files or subfolders. Each subfolder or VPK is added as a search custom, so the files inside those VPK's or subfolders will overide the default game files.
See gameinfo.txt for more details.
For example, you might have the following file structure:
hl2mp/custom/my_custom_stuff/ <<< This subfolder will be added as a search custom hl2mp/custom/my_custom_stuff/models/custom_model.mdl hl2mp/custom/my_custom_stuff/materials/custom_material.vmt hl2mp/custom/my_custom_stuff/materials/vgui/custom_ui_thing.res hl2mp/custom/some_mod.vpk <<< This VPK will be added as a search custom hl2mp/custom/another_mod.vpk <<< This VPK will be added as a search custom
Mounting a VPK to the filesystem is more efficient that adding a subfolder, because each time the engine neds to open a file, it will need to make a call to the operating system call to search the folder. VPKs can be searched by the engine much more efficiently. Each subfolder is a new search custom that must be checked each time the engine tries to open a file. So for optimal load times, always use VPK files and don't make any subfolders in this folder!
Note that the following directory structure is NOT correct:
hl2mp/custom/models/my_model.mdl
That will add the directory "hl2mp/custom/models" as a search path, in which case the file my_model.mdl actually exists at the root of the game's virtual filesystem.

So I managed to get the custom cross-hair installed. I go to edit my clientscheme.res and i changed the normal to my own color; made it read only; and started my game. I did not work. I was wondering if you had any other ideas. I followed the bulls-eye cross-hair link to the letter I believe. I couldnt find the hl2dm.gcf but I found the clientscheme and was able to edit it. I am at a complete loss XD

I did the same as you ,still not the green I want. But I have my cross-hairs. I also took out (yellowish) and put in (greenish) with 0 255 0 255 no help.
